From the laboratories of the University of Pisa comes a groundbreaking study to help prevent metabolic diseases. An in-vitro model of diabetes has been developed by the interdisciplinary research group led by Arti Ahluwalia, Professor of Bioengineering, at the Interdepartmental Research Center “E. Piaggio ” in the University of Pisa. The model reproduces some of the features of human metabolic disorders in vitro, simulating the stress that organs are subjected to as a consequence of diabetes, and responds in a manner similar to the human body, showing the same signs of damage that occur at the systemic level and in vascular tissue in the presence of the disease.
In a recent letter to the Lancet, the leading UK medical journal, several prominent scientists have called for more research into new ways of testing the safety and efficacy of drugs. One of the signatories was Kirkstall’s CEO, Dr J Malcolm Wilkinson. New methods could also help reduce the dependence on animal testing which, in addition to the ethical arguments against it, has produced misleading results in many cases and could be leading to unnecessary attrition in the drug development pipeline.
